Text Sound Notifications Not Working? How to Fix…

In this post, I’d like to share with you an issue my Dad was experiencing on his iPhone 7 with the hope that it may help some of you who are experiencing the same issue.
Yesterday, my Dad gave me a call and told me about an issue he was having. Essentially, he was not being notified with a sound when a new text message arrived on his iPhone (he was not experiencing this on his iPad and Mac).
Well, right away I suggested he check his volume level and whether Do Not Disturb was turned on. But those ideas didn’t solve his issue.
After spending some time troubleshooting, we finally resolved the issue.
That being said, I’d like to share what to do when your Apple iPad or iPhone is not making any sounds when you receive a new text message. Hopefully one of these suggestions will help solve the issue.
Shall we…
If incoming text or iMessage notification sounds are not working your iOS device, the following are steps to take to fix the issue:
- Make sure that you do not have arithmetically Do Not Disturb turned on. You may check this by going to Settings > Do Not Disturb. Set this to “Off”. You can also swipe up from the bottom edge of your screen to access the Control Center. Look for the quarter Moon icon (Do Not Disturb). If it is ‘blue’, that means Do Not Disturb is turned on. Simply tap the Moon icon to turn it off (Moon icon is gray when off).
- Most users don’t realize this, but you can actually turn on Do Not Disturb for any contact. To verify this, launch the Messages app where you can see your messages. See if any messages display the Do-Not-Disturb Moon icon. If so, this means that you enabled Do Not Disturb for that contact.
To disable this, tap the message “Details” icon (circle with an “i” in it) in the upper-right corner of the associated message. Next, find the “Do Not Disturb” option and turn it off.
- Make sure you are allowing notifications for the Messages app. To check this, tap Settings > Notifications > Messages, make sure that “Allow Notifications” is turned on.
- Your device has a mute switch (ring or silent). On your iPhone, this switch is located on the left side of your device above the volume, on your iPad, it is located on the right side of your iPad.
NOTE: Newer iPads don’t have an external mute switch anymore. You need to check the Control Center to see whether mute is turned on.
- Check to see whether you have a Text Tone selected in your Sound & HapticsSettings.
- Restart your device by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until you see the “Slide to power off” slider, then slide the slider right.
- Reset your device by holding down the Home button and the Power button (wake/sleep) until you see the Apple logo.
- Finally, you can try restarting the Messages app. You can force the Messages app to quit by simply pressing the Home button twice, find the Messages app, and swipe up on its thumbnail icon to close it. Then, at your home screen, tap the Messages app to relaunch again.
That’s it. Hopefully you’ll find a solution to your text message notification sound issue with one of these options. I know my Dad and I did.
There you go! I hope you learned something from this post. If you did, go show off to your family and friends. You deserve it!
